The Deerslayer James Fenimore Cooper 9781493663002 Books
Although it is an old story, Cooper does a great job telling it. Unfortunately I was not aware that this book and "Last of the Mohicans" were linked by several of the main characters. I should have read "Deerslayer" first. Not a big problem, however, since both were very good reads. I particularly like the old verbiage the author used. It is very interesting to learn the way we used to write.Product details

The Deerslayer James Fenimore Cooper 9781493663002 Books Reviews
The Deerslayer. What can I say.
Good book. Classic for a reason.
If you're a fan of Natty Bumpo, you need to read this book. Gives a good back story to our hero, Hawkeye and his friend Chingachgook.
Pro Beautiful background scenery.
Con "Beautiful background scenery" is the best part.
Cooper has many elements of a fine period piece a beautiful lake in unsettled colonial upstate New York; a hostile Indian tribe; several romantic possibilities; a family with a mysterious past; a young man who likes to philosophize.
But so few of them catch fire. The hostile Indians attack a few times; but in between, they allow members of the protagonist's party to come and go almost at will. There are only a few battle scenes with a feeling of danger. One of them did get me going. Hurry Harry gets tied up -- then thrown in the lake -- then shot at -- that really made me feel danger! Most of the rest of the time -- not very much.
The romantic sub-plots are more substantial. The main one simmers throughout the book, but others are resolved without enough tension. Same with the backstory of the girls' mother and father.
Another jarring note Floating Tom's Castle and Ark are incongruously large. There are hints he has the money to buy such things -- but how did he get a lot of people into uninhabited territory for the labor?
Overall, many good moments, but does not hit the bulls-eye.
I first read this book while in high school in 1954 and I absolutely could not put it down to eat or sleep. The book I was reading had been printed in the 1920's (I still have it.) and I noticed that one single sentence occupied three-fourths of a page; and flowed so smoothly, and so flawlessly -- without breaking the continuity of thought and imagination. Because of Cooper's stories, I'm building my physical and Libraries with all of his books -- and those that provide factual histories of the people and events of that amazing and productive period.
This cd made reading Deerslayer much easier.
You must use an MP3 player. A regular CD player
Will work but you cannot return to track you
finished....you have to replay the whole track.
The Deerslayer (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) by James Fenimore Cooper (2005-07-01)
I enjoyed this the second time around. However, do not be fooled. It is wordy, graphic, and sad. Growing up is hard for anybody but the Dearslayer wanted to establish his identity before he settled down. The descriptions of 1700's in America are really the description of the Lake, the woodland, the Indians and the men and women in that century. This book is part of a set of four novels written by Cooper.
It is very interesting to learn the way we used to write.
